Of Niceness and Originality

OF NICENESS:

This morning, I happened upon the lovely Julie Paisley’s facebook page because I saw in my feed some stir about a campaign called The “Be Nice” Campaign. I adore that Julie’s heart is to help other photographers, and to spread love to other photographers rather than judgement and hate. I encourage you to join the campaign. I do think that we should be kind to others in our personal and professional life. I feel as if I also have a burden to help those who ask me questions and I’ve made it a rule to pretty much be an open book. Let me say in the humblest way possible, that I have the confidence that there is only one me. I also have built the confidence over the past year that my own ideas always translate the best in my photography. I feel empowered that when I express an idea that had been hatched in my mind from all the things I’ve seen and loved through my life and manifested itself as a complete idea as I’ve brainstormed and created… it’s an incredible feeling of ownership when all is said and done.

OF ORIGINALITY:

When I first started my photography journey (before it was a career) I was TRULY inspired by other photographers. BUT my business and art didn’t start to grow until I stopped looking outward and started looking inward. Do you know that YOU are an original? Do you know that you see the world in a way so UNIQUE that no one else sees it in the exact same way? Though I never ever condone the use of snark or insult by some artists who scathe others for “copying” their ideas, I do want to say that if you’ve ever been the brunt of this snark, they are doing you a FAVOR and I understand where their frustration is coming from. Listen, as an artist, our souls must CREATE. We must bring our vision to the world. The truly great artists of every generation have a legion of cheap copies that follow in their wake. Unfortunately, as you see on Antiques Roadshow all the time, the difference between the value of a true piece and a copy is often tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Believe me, I’m not going to sit on a high horse and say all of my stuff is original… I mean, c’mon- even unintentionally ideas intersect! BUT my goal as I grow more and more is to become more and more SINGULAR. True to MYSELF. I just want to empower you that YOU are good enough. Get all the technical information from every photographer you love. Learn the nitty gritty basics, get the tricks and tips. When all is said and done though, take your knowledge and give the world something AMAZING! I’ll join you as I endeavor to do the same!

XOXO!

Love your honesty, Kina! The “Be Nice” Campaign is a great movement in our industry and I think it’ll help introverted photographers branch out of their comfort zone and have some fun :-)

So very well said!

Catherine & Abhishek {Omaha Wedding Photography}

Catherine and Abhishek’s Nebraska nuptials were my last of 2011! Taking place on the weekend after Thanksgiving, Catherine and Abhishek wanted to take full advantage of the holiday weekend. They took time to celebrate not only their wedding, but the fact that all of their family was in town (most of them came from India!)

Catherine is originally from Mumbai, India, where her father is a Christian pastor. Being in Omaha for the last several years getting her Masters and PHD, she wanted to tie her American and Indian roots together for her wedding celebration at the First Baptist Church of Plattsmouth where she found a church home and a “family” while away from home. I loved the rich details of the sari she wore for her reception and had the teenagers of the church wear as they helped to host the event. I tried to convince her to let me have one… ha!

Though the week of Thanksgiving was gorgeous, Saturday dawned 19 degrees with 45 mile wind gusts, so needless to say, our plans to shoot outdoors were severely limited! Catherine and Abhishek simply took it in stride though! The happiness that reigned did not depend on the weather or the circumstances. It was all fueled by each other and the warmth of being surrounded by family and friends!

Congratulations again on a beautiful day and a beautiful life together you two!

Rob & Suzy {Chicago Anniversary Photography}

I had a blast roaming around the city with these Suzy & Rob! They’re from North Carolina, and decided to come freeze it out in Chicago for their anniversary and do a special photo session while they were in town! We literally talked each other’s ears off the whole 2 and a half hours we spent together… and I was secretly a little jealous of their southern drawls:) Rob is in the military and I have a special place in my heart for servicemen and their wives since my dad served in the Marine Corps for 21 years. I loved the life since we got to travel the world, but I also know how taxing it can be on a family. Suzy said the first year of their marriage, Rob was sent to Iraq, so now three years in, they still feel like newlyweds! (they act like it too!)

These two thought the historic water tower in downtown would be an ideal location and my own little secret is that I have a soft spot in my heart for this area because my own engagement photos (done by Courtney Dellafiora) years ago on a cold January day were shot partly in the same courtyard of the 4th Presbyterian Church right near the water tower. There’s just magic in the architecture… and a haunting beauty that takes over in the bleakness of winter with the bare vines and grey skies. We ended up in Hyde Park and shot around some of the magnificent structures at Chicago University… LOVE!

Endings… and Beginnings

As 2011 has been winding to a close, I’ve had this post ruminating in my mind. Parts of it have bubbled up from deep within my soul, and some of the things I’ll say were hatched as strategic plans for the future as I cleared my mind during a vacation on the Florida beaches earlier this month. The common thread through all my musings for 2011 would have to be a profound sense of GRATEFULNESS.

I’m grateful for the love of my life, Jonathan. I’ll never get over the miracle that God created a man that would be a perfect fit for a quirky, independent girl that secretly longed for love and a best friend. He “gets” me, he supports me, and he truly, truly loves me. That love changes me every day.

I’m grateful for beginnings. When I started my business in August of 2010 I would have never guessed how fast it would grow and how much this growth would facilitate my own personal growth. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve cried in frustration while trying to stretch myself, but I’ve also been on the mountain tops and felt a sense of peace knowing that I’m getting somewhere on my journey.

I’m grateful BEYOND WORDS for the people that make my business possible… my clients. My heart swells when I think of this amazing group of human beings who have trusted me, encouraged me, had patience with a new photographer that sometimes made mistakes. These people are the reason I do what I do. Everyone deserves to live a “fairytale” and I’m so passionate about creating beautiful moments for REAL people. I love love love that this is what I get to give to the world, and I will continue to strive to give my best to these wonderful people.

I’m grateful for those in the industry who have believed in me. I have received support from other photographers that I love and admire. Some have answered questions, some have just lent an ear when I was overwhelmed, and some have encouraged me with praise when I needed it most. I hope to always “pay it forward” and give this love to others coming behind me. I have been featured on several sites this year, including On To Baby, La Petite Peach, Style Me Pretty, and All the Photographers.

I am grateful for the One who has given me the blueprint to be truly balanced and successful. The One who teaches me about true love and shows me beauty every day. Ever since I was a little girl, I feel as if my relationship with God has shaped me more than anything else. Though I don’t often bring spirituality into my business as a matter of respect for others, I think it would be sad to say thank you without remembering the most important Love in my life.

Well, an ending of a year always brings a beautiful beginning of another, and the forecast for 2012 is looking pretty peachy! Beginnings usually mean change is coming as well, and it’s certainly brewing over here at Kina Wicks Photography. There are so many dreams and goals that I can’t even tell you about yet, but if you stay tuned I think you’ll be as excited as I am!

My main goals for 2012 will revolve around making my client experience the BEST it can possibly be. With 23 weddings already booked for 2012, I will be suspending my portrait business for the time being. I am in the works of possibly adding an associate to offer some portrait services for families and seniors in the future and of course I will offer portrait marathons a couple of times a year. I do think this is a timely and important change in my business that was inevitable after the explosive growth I experienced last year. I’ve come to realize that you can be good at everything but only GREAT at very few things… and for me my priorities this year will be creating fabulous engagement and wedding photos, a warm, satisfying and timely experience for these clients, and still have a balance in my personal life. I’m also bringing on an intern that will work with me in the office and at weddings and you’ll meet her soon!

I’d like to end this post with a few photos from 2011… THANK YOU again for being an encouragement to me through your words on facebook, emails and on this blog. XOXO!!

Just read this - a few days late! I am so grateful to have been one of your wedding clients last year, and even more grateful to have you as a friend. Hope to meet up again some time in 2012! Thank you for all your encouragement and for just being you. Love you!

Jess & Bryan {Chicago Engagement Photography}

Sometimes I fear because I say it so much that it’s going to sound insincere or just common, but believe me it hits me so many times when I get to know one of the couples that I have the privilege of shooting their engagement sessions and weddings. I have the most WONDERFUL clients. I am so often struck by what great human beings they are, what sincere love they share for each other, and how gracious they act. Really. I hear stories working in the industry about this or that type of customer that vendors work with and I always have to shrug my shoulders… because I guess I just get lucky every time. Like Maria Von Trap in the Sound of Music I think…”somewhere in my youth or childhood… I must have done something good.” haha Not really, but seriously… As 2011 draws to a close I’m overwhelmed by the gratefulness I have for all of the people that have made my first official year in business a success. More on this in my next post!

Jess & Bryan are ^THAT couple. I sat down at a Starbucks with them, talked about how they met through Hockey, they gave me advice about the area where my husband and I were moving too, discussed wedding plans… and at the end of the meeting I knew that they were clearly in love with each other and now I was in love with both of them!;) ha They both still have Hockey near to their hearts… coaching teams and Bryan running a sports retail business. They’re fun. They’re joyful. They’re “cool”. Need I say more?!
